The short answer to this question is: you need a wireless adapter if your console is not within range of your current router or you want to reduce wire clutter around your console.  If you just want to hook up your Xbox to the internet with an ethernet cable. 

On the other hand, if you want to increase the speed of your console’s connection, or if your router and your console are in different places and you don’t want the hassle of relocating everything, an Xbox 360 wireless adapter may be necessary for you.  This adapter is essentially all the wires and cables you’d need for an internet connection – but wrapped up into one tiny chip that you place on the back of the console.  Internal and external antennae, wired into the adapter, provide the fastest possible connection.

The adapter also gives you the widest range you can possible get for signals to your console, so you can have it in virtually any room of the house, regardless of where your router is located.  This is great if your PC/router are in one room and your console is in an entirely different room – even if it’s on another story.

The Xbox 360 wireless adapter is also: 

-Windows Media Center compatible, meaning you can transfer videos/music from your PC to your Xbox

-Sleek and functional

-Powered totally by the Xbox console itself; no need for external batteries or wires of any kind

There is a downside to these adapters, though, and that’s the pricetag.  They run from $75-100, depending on brand and model.  They can be found in any major retailers, both on and offline. 

Bottom line: if you’re willing to spend a little extra on a sleekly-designed piece of hardware that will reduce wire clutter and make your connection faster and more efficient (or if you just want a way to transfer data between your PC and Xbox easily), an Xbox 360 wireless adapter may be necessary for you.
